When I first started working with Assemble the first thing I've done was the heuristic review of the complete app to have a basic understanding without any bias.
I then started talking to business stakeholders: CEO and CTO, as well as lead developer.
Once I got an understanding from business perspective and armed with the knowledge of technical stack, I drilled down into implemented user flows.
At the end I've spent first 30 days to understand the business, their goals and completed my SaaS audit.
I was lucky enough to have access to Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in volunteering and charity sector. So, I spent time with them to understand how user processes within volunteering industry works, formal and informal.
While I was working on new features, I decidedly created an easy to follow layout to reach the widest possible audience. All created designs were benchmarked against Accessibility Level AA.
Before too long I had enough components to start a UI library as well.
I have completely redesigned the information architecture and navigation. I designed all flows and UI for several new features while creating a Assemble Design Guidelines together with a small component library. It took around 8 months for our first engagement to end. Assemble had to focus on marketing on the new features and gain more user data.
A year later, Assemble had grown their market share and got several high street charities on board. They asked me to do a research within their users including non-volunteers to understand how users incorporate the app in their daily work and how they find it - while designing couple of new features for the app.
It didn't take Assemble long to gain more share and became the market leader by large margin. Soon after Assemble was acquired by Access Group.
